Checking In: Taylor Swift Week, Red Lip Drama and Work Things

On Sunday, Connor declared that it was going to be Taylor Swift week at our house, so we’ve been listening to Taylor Swift music all week long. My new favorite Taylor song is “Bejeweled.”

It’s one of those songs that took a while to grow on me. When I first heard it, I thought, “Eh, it’s okay,” but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it.

I also wore red lipstick every day to work as a homage to T-Swift! In the pic above I’m wearing MAC Retro Matte in Feels so Grand.

You know how sometimes when you put on red lipstick, one side looks a little wonky, so you try to correct it, and then next thing you know, the other side looks wonky, and you correct the other side, but then another part starts to look funny, and it goes on and on and on? That’s what happened here. Miraculously, it eventually worked out, and I made it to work on time.

Speaking of work, it’s been going great. I enjoy helping instructors and students, and every once in a while I get to flex my writing and editing skills.

The pace is very different compared to what I’m used to in marketing/creative in the private sector. People actually hang out, ya know, at the water cooler. It’s so wild to me, especially after years of solely interacting socially on Zoom. When you work online, there’s never really that time to just run into someone in the hallway or the break room and chat. It’s refreshing.

I do find, though, that even though I enjoy the social aspects of the job, that I need time to be by myself throughout the day. Occasionally I’ll go into my office and just retreat (I call it “hermit crabbing”) for a while so I can be alone.

Speaking of offices, I recently realized that there are things about shared office spaces that I haven’t had to think about in forever.

(TMI moment ahead, by the way.)

I used to eat whatever I wanted during lunch because it was just me and Rosie at home, but now that there’s other people in the mix — forget about it.

I realized that there are certain, ahem, gassy foods I now have to avoid at lunch if I’m going to be amongst other people. One cannot just eat lentil soup without suffering the consequences!

The other day I brought an eggroll in a bowl dish with tons of shredded cabbage, and it was so hard to, uh, keep things to myself, if you know what I mean.

Did I mention that I share an office with someone, and we have a window that can’t open? HA HA HA!

Anywho, overall work’s been fine. It’s such a big weight off my shoulders knowing that I have something steady that’s not going anywhere (knock on wood because you never know).

It’s allowed my mind to have lots more mental space to be creative.

Hope things are going well with you. Happy Friday!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

I am so happy that you are loving your new job. Working at a college sounds so interesting and I bet it is a lot of fun. I always think college campuses have great energy and atmosphere. I totally get what you are saying about sharing an office – cubicles are a problem, too. Just FYI, you can order charcoal seat cushions from Amazon that might help you in your current situation.

Ooh, I’ll look into those cushions, LOL! Happy weekend, Daphne. 🙂

I’m glad your new job is going well, Karen! It is nice to have that security and good benefits that a college/public sector job provides, especially at this stage in life! I feel like I’ve always had government type jobs that while secure, are not the most exciting after a while. I agree with Daphne, the poster above me, about college campuses having a great energy and it’s almost like it’s own town within a town! I am glad I switched jobs a year ago! Have a great weekend!

Yes, it is! I realize that there will come a time when it will feel routine, but I figure I can always find an interesting project to keep me busy. 🙂 You have a great weekend too!

Glad you are enjoying your new job. You gave me a chuckle with the foods story. I totally understand about the struggles of putting on red lipstick! I struggle with dark lip colors. I probably should use a matching lip liner, but it’s another product I have to use with limited time in the morning. Hope you had a great Friday!

Dark lip colors are challenging for me too. It’s a miracle I wasn’t more of a mess during the ’90s, ha ha ha!

Have a great weekend, Marcia. 🙂

So happy to hear you are enjoying the new job! Haha, I once had an office mate who would heat up Brussels sprouts in the office microwave. And I once made the mistake of bringing a sardine sandwich for lunch.
I haven’t worn a red lip in ages. I think I need to downsize my red lipstick collection. I have a sheer one by Shiseido that must be 20 years old. It’s red but not, if you get what I mean. It’s a day to day red that was easy to wear. I don’t wear it anymore, but I keep it as a reference hoping to find something close to it.

Wear one around the house just for fun!

Maybe try NARS Dolce Vita? It’s red but not. More like a reddish rose!

Dolce Vita is not red to my eye. It’s definitely dirty rose. I’ve been through 4, 5 maybe 6 tubes of it. It’s one of my go-to colors.

        BTW, Go Niners!

          Yesterday’s game was crazy!

Tell me about it. Dear Husband got fed up in the first quarter and we went out to dinner and just recorded the game.
But I have cousins in SE Michigan and they kept texting me during dinner, so we went home and watched the rest. Ever since I was a kid I remember the Lions being the worst team in the NFL, year after year after year.
So now we play the Chiefs and my brother lives in Kansas City and he’s a huge fan.
I still love that catch that bounced off the Lions face mask.
