1. Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler

Hydro Flask

So you didn’t catch the Valentine’s Day Stanley at Target. Don’t fret—this 40-ounce cup is the next best thing. Buyers have a lot of good things to say about Hydro Flask tumblers, and since they also have double-wall vacuum insulation (so your drink stays cold), a stainless-steel body (for optimal durability and taste) and a flexible straw that fits snugly and securely (so no unwanted splashes), we can see why they give Stanley a run for its money. BTW, if you’ve ever struggled to get a tumbler to fit in your car cup holder, you shouldn’t have that problem with this guy, which is designed to fit perfectly in most of ‘em.

2. Airpher Electric Spin Scrubber

Airpher

Cleaning your kitchen sink, tub and bathroom floor won’t feel like a humongous chore when you’ve got this electric spin scrubber in hand. It comes with nine brush heads, a velcro holder and a hook so you can tackle your cleaning task like a pro and hang it up when you’re done. Not to mention, it boasts an adjustable and detachable four-section handle that takes it from 29 to 47 inches to get to all those hard-to-reach places. As one reviewer says, “[It] makes cleaning the shower walls so much easier and better than by hand.” One charge gets you up to 120 minutes of juice, and that’s plenty of time to tackle your cleaning tasks.

3. Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Generation

Apple

In 2020, we deemed Apple AirPods a must-have for anyone leading a wireless life (just read our full review). Now, in 2024, the headphones have gotten *evenbetter. Specifically, these 2nd generation earbuds have richer sound, better noise-canceling abilities and a longer battery life of up to 30 hours, per the manufacturer, so you can take calls, listen to music and jam out the gym with no fear of fizzling. If you have yet to snag a pair for yourself, we suggest you take advantage of this nearly $50 discount.

4. Bissell Little Green Cleaner

Bissell

Why is everyone so obsessed with this Little Green cleaning machine? Feel free to read our full review, but to put it in a nutshell, the small-but-mighty machine weighs under ten pounds, making it easy to tote around the house, but is also powerfully effective, as it was able to suction up dirt and grime to make our old sofas, carpets and car seats look five years younger. Most importantly, however, is the fact that it’s easy to use. All you have to do is soak the stain in the solution and let it sit for at least ten minutes. Then, vacuum up the mess, and voilà—squeaky clean upholstery, sans the pricey professionals.

5. Solawave 4-in-1 Facial Wand and Renew Complex Serum Bundle

SolaWave

As PureWow Commerce Editor Olivia Dubyak explains in her review, this Solawave facial wand touts some hefty anti-aging claims—from smoothing textured skin to blurring fine lines and wrinkles. But does it actually live up to the hype? Well, besides making her skin glowy AF, it did help minimize her fine lines and brightened her dark circles in just a few weeks. In other words, the skincare gadget that vibrates, warms and emits red light (which studies suggest has many skincare benefits) is worth every penny, especially when you can snag it alongside the Renew Complex Serum, a lightweight formula that’s meant to be used with the device for prime results. It’s filled with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera to help keep your skin nourished and hydrated. This duo set is just under $150 right now, and you won’t find a better deal on the celeb-approved device.

PureWow Editor-Favorite

6. Beautural Foldable Steamer

Beautural

We tested this foldable steamer and found it to be a gentle-yet-effective way to get wrinkles out of even our most delicate clothing. It heats up in as little as 30 seconds, while its compact and leakproof design allows you to steam horizontally *andvertically without having to worry about getting wet spots on your clothes. We particularly love that the 5.08-ounce water tank is detachable for easy filling, and that it comes with an extra-long, 8-foot cord, which comes in handy when we’re struggling to find a plug. Best of all, it’s designed for easy packing, so you can simply fold it up and pop it into your suitcase, carry-on or gym bag for crisp, wrinkle-free clothes on-the-go.

These TikTok-famous cups won over PureWow Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay, and we’re not the least bit surprised. The oh-so-aesthetic drinkware set is made from durable, dishwasher-friendly glass and comes complete with four bamboo lids and four wide glass straws for easy sipping. “Somehow drinking my iced coffee out of these glasses is an all-around better experience,” raves Yohay, who adds that the lids are impressively leakproof to boot.

Hoping to impress your dentist in 2024? Grab this electric toothbrush and you’ll be one step closer to getting a pat on the back at your next visit. This toothbrush, with not one, but *fivecleaning modes (including Daily Clean, Intense Clean, Sensitive, Super-Sensitive and Whitening), removes more plaque (even between the teeth) for healthier gums in just one week, according to the brand. Better yet, it connects to an A.I. powdered Oral-B app, which lets you track your brushing in real time to see what spots you missed and where you can improve. But don’t just take our word for it. One reviewer raves, “It notifies me if I have brushed too light or too hard on my teeth and detects what teeth I am cleaning and for how long.” Basically, it’s like having your own personal oral hygienist on call whenever you clean your chompers. How cool, no?

A kitchen gadget that acts as multiple appliances in one is a must-have—especially when it’s nearly $120 off. According to Senior Food Editor Katherine Gillen, who tested this extra-roomy, does-it-all air fryer and toaster oven, it’s not only incredibly versatile, but also a great piece to have if you want yummy meals in half the time. “I don’t know how long it takes to preheat my regular oven, but it’s similar to watching a pot of water come to a boil. The Cuisinart takes a quick five minutes to preheat,” she writes. “And when the food goes in, it cooks fast.” It also bakes, broils, slow cooks, roasts and warms, so don’t be surprised if you use your big oven *a lotless.

11. Lumineux Teeth Whitening Strips

Lumineux

If you love the Crest 3D Whitestrips but feel a little tooth sensitivity after using, these Lumineux strips are the perfect alternative (no, really, we tested them). Not only have they been making the rounds on TikTok lately, but they are also on sale for a steal right now. Buyers claim that they work wonders to brighten their smiles in no time, while the peroxide-free formula proves gentle on sensitive teeth. Per the brand, the strips use nontoxic, natural ingredients like coconut oil, lemon peel oil, sage oil and dead sea salt to help whiten teeth without damaging the enamel. While the brand says it may take a few 30-minute treatments to start seeing results, some reviewers say their teeth looked brighter after the very first use. If that’s not a reason to smile, we don’t know what is.

13. Nespresso Vertuo Next Coffee and Espresso Machine

Nespresso

This countertop essential makes fantastic coffee in record time—and it’s kinda like having your own personal barista on call 24/7. Almost every morning for the past year, we’ve used this sleek machine to make 5-, 8- and 12-ounce coffees, as well as single and double espresso shots, and they’ve come out perfectly every time. Better yet, using it is a breeze. Only a few steps are required every now and then, like filling up the removable water tank, emptying the capsule container and adjusting the cup height. Other than that, though, all you have to do is pop in a Nespresso capsule, press the button and voilà, your coffee is served. And if you really want to get fancy, this device comes with a milk frother to make cappuccinos and lattes, so you can seriously cut back on your daily Starbucks visits (and save a ton of dough as a result).

Add this deep conditioning treatment to your wash day and watch your hair’s natural color change. According to the brand, you can see a fresh shade appear on your strands in as little as three minutes. Plus, the formula doesn’t contain any peroxide or ammonia, so you can use it as often as you like without drying out your strands. Try out semi-permanent colors like auburn, copper or strawberry, which offers a boost shine and softness to your dark locks. “It took all the cool tones out of my hair and warmed it up [with] just the right amount and left it soft and shiny. I will continue to use this when I need to help my grays blend in better with my natural dark hair without that harsh stark contrast,” shares one Ulta reviewer.

    Splat

Packed with finely milled micro-pigments that attach to the surface of your hair (rather than penetrating the shaft), this semi-permanent dye provides up to six weeks of bold color. The bleach-free kit is infused with baobab seed oil to nourish and protect strands, as well as quinoa extract to prevent breakage, improve shine and seal-in shade. It’s specifically made for brunettes, so try out the “Midnight Tanzanite” shade without needing to lighten hair first. As one shopper notes, “It works great on brunettes. Purple is very vivid and [leaves] such a pretty color. You may need help because if it gets on the skin it can stay on for over 24 hours.” Make sure to slip on a pair of rubber gloves before you get started because—as you can imagine—the dye is quite powerful.

From copper tones to icy blues, spray the vivid hue directly onto your strands and opt for subtle ends or spritz all over to your hearts desire—with no mess, bleach or peroxide in sight. Shoppers enjoy the no-fuss application, using it primarily to cover grays or thinning spots. “I have fairly dark brown hair and needed this for a Halloween costume as Ginny Weasley [from Harry Potter], who has bright red hair. Of course, I didn’t expect it to turn out as red as in the movies, but this did the job fairly well. It made my hair look reddish and was easy to apply,” shares one Amazon shopper.

Pick from five bold shades (like green or raspberry) and try out those money piece highlights you’ve been holding off on. “This color is awesome on my dark brown hair. I used it to change my hair color for a Halloween costume and I got so many compliments on my hair all night. I applied it to dry hair, combed through and then used the blow dryer. I then went and had my hair done with a curling iron and more teasing and brushing and the color stayed in wonderfully,” says one Amazon customer.

Hair dyes can leave a very strong (and often unpleasant) scent behind which has everything to do with the chemicals. However, this is not the case with this color conditioner from Overtone, which is specifically designed for brown locks. The formula has coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil and jojoba oil to moisturize and repair strands. Leave it on for 15 minutes, rinse and see the pigment shine through—regardless what color you choose (though our favorite has to be the rose gold hue). “This is the second color for brown hair I’ve tried. Both worked well for me (purple and rose gold) and I love that it doesn’t damage my hair. The color is really pretty though and Overtone [conditioner] smells great!” shares one Overtone reviewer.

I have very very dark brown hair and it works great. I love how bright and vibrant the colors turn out without me having to bleach it! Frequently Asked Questions

What to Consider When Shopping for the Best Hair Dye for Dark Hair

    1. Look for brands dedicated to dark hair. There are plenty of brands like Overtone and Splat, who have collections formulated for dark hair. Start with those brands to find a color for your strands.
    2. Take hair type and texture into account. Think beyond your natural hair color. Your hair type and texture, as well as your porosity and density level can determine how well your hair can take color.
    3. Consider doing a patch test first. Dorram suggests taking a small strand behind the ear and testing out the color before fully committing. She also recommends drying your hair after washing it, so you can really see how accurate the color looks under very good lighting.

Don’t fall into delulu land and expect every hair color to work on darker strands. It’s unlikely dark locks can turn into bright blonde pieces without the use of a lightener like bleach. “Permanent hair color will lighten natural hair about 1-2 levels, which might be less than you envision. It can mean going from dark brunette to medium brunette at best,” says Perkins. “If you’re looking for a noticeable change to lightness from dark hair, you may actually need to consider lighteners —which is not necessarily a bad thing in the right hands with a transparent consultation.”

How to Dye Dark Hair At Home

The experts provided salon tips and tricks, so you can color your hair at home like a pro.

    1. Gather all your materials. Aside from the hair dye, have clips, gloves and a brush ready. Also consider wearing an old T-shirt and/or a towel you don’t care about getting stained.
    2. Cover your hair coloring station. Perkins suggest placing some parchment paper down to catch any drips and avoid staining your sink. “Also tape the instructions on your mirror, so you don’t have to keep touching it when you have color on your gloves,” adds Perkins.
    3. Apply Vaseline on skin to avoid stains. Dorram suggests applying Vaseline (or any petroleum jelly) on your hairline, tips of the ears and along the nape of the neck. She adds, “This step will ensure the skin will not have tell tale signs when you are through [coloring your hair].”
    4. Use a color with ash tones. “While all natural hair colors have some amount of warmth to them (think yellow, orange, and red tones), darker hair has the most. Even if you’re not going for an ashy, cool-toned color, having some blue or green pigment is necessary for your hair to look neutral and not reddish,” says Perkins.
    5. Follow the instructions on the box. It’s important to go through each step slowly to ensure an even application. Most box dyes will have you start at the root before blending it down to the ends using an applicator brush. Remember to work in sections and wrap your hair up while you wait for the color to process.
Wash your hair and condition afterwards. Dorram say a sulfate-free shampoo and a deep conditioner can help keep your hair color looking vibrant and fresh.

Can we talk about how great mascara is for a minute?!

I mean, very few things survived The Great Makeup Culling of 2020 in my makeup bag. But mascara did.

I usually go for “all teh drama” (See: Bite Beauty Upswing, Laura Mercier Caviar) because I like my fringe brash and bold. I like volume, length, curl and all the drama for your mama, but if you primarily want length and lift, you might like Lancôme’s latest. It’s called Idôle Lash-Lifting & Volumizing Mascara, and it’s $26.

It lifts, fans, curls and separates lashes with a cool curved brush and a lightweight gel formula that doesn’t make my lashes crunchy, clumpy or heavy.

I think it creates a lovely natural-ish lash look that really goes well with minimal makeup, like brows that a lightly filled in, sheer bases, soft blush tints and maybe a lipstick or balm. Think WFH chic.

If, however, you need more KAPOW in the same price range, check out Bite’s or Laura’s mascaras.

I need more drama as well, but I adore Lancôme mascaras – they were my first high end mascaras that I bought and repurchased several times.

The Best Presidents’ Day Sales to Shop and Save in 2024

    A woman shopping online.Westend61/Getty Images,

Sorry, Punxsutawney Phil, but springtime doesn’t seem to be coming early this year. The best Presidents’ Day sales, however, thankfully are. I must admit, a shopping spree is just what I needed to get through the rest of the winter, so I’m glad to hop on these sales, which, as a deals editor, I can confirm are some the *bestof the season. With massive discounts on everything from chic outfits at lululemon and J.Crew to home must-haves from Brooklinen, Amazon and Wayfair, there are plenty of ways to save during the holiday weekend—and I’m giving you the scoop on all of ‘em.

First off, my fellow PureWow editors and I plan on jumping on too-good-to-be-true prices on our favorite beauty buys (including a rare 15 percent discount on SkinCeuticals with coupon code SKINC15). We also plan to take full advantage of the top mattress sales (like an exclusive offer at Saatva) to sleep and save like a queen this spring—whenever it arrives. Don’t know where *youshould start shopping? Here are the 20 best Presidents’ Day sales to shop in 2024.

Want to know which buzzy products are *reallyworth buying? Sign up for our shopping newsletter to uncover our favorite finds.

    1. Brooklinen

    Brooklinen

Want to upgrade your bedding? We suggest doing so while Brooklinen slashes 20 percent off its highly rated sheets, comforters, pillowcases and robes. Just so you know, PureWow Assistant Editor, Sydney Meister, put a few of the brand’s best-selling pieces to the test, including the All-Season Down Comforter (was $189, now $151) and Sateen Luxe Core Sheet Set (was $159; now $127). You can read her full review, but to put it in a nutshell: both pieces lived up to the hype. Not only was the comforter super fluffy for that just-out-of-a-catalog bedding look, but it was also lightweight, so she didn’t feel suffocated in her sleep. Meanwhile, the sheets were soft, comfortable and held up in the washer. BTW, you also shouldn’t sleep on the brand’s Organic Ribbed Robe (was $119, now $95), a personal favorite, which we can confirm will keep you cozy year-round.

To say we’re in love with Article furniture would be an understatement, so there’s no question whether we’re taking advantage of its Presidents’ Day Sale, which features an up to 30 percent discount on many of its equally functional and beautiful home designs. If you’re new to the brand, allow us to introduce you to the Kayra ivory bouclé sofa (was $1,299, now $1,169). It may just be the answer to your cat-scratch woes, according to one former PureWow editor, who gave it 97 out of 100 points in a PureWow100 review. In fact, she loved it so much that she ended up buying the matching ottoman ($299) to go with it. While that particular one is not on sale, tons of other cute poufs are, so you know what to do.

Whether you’re shopping for a new Bluetooth speaker or robot vacuum, Amazon’s Presidents’ Day Sale has got you covered. However, if we were you, we would hop on the discount on the Apple AirPods Pro (were $249, now $190). Not only do the noise-canceling earbuds block outside sounds (like sirens or construction) to provide crisp and immersive listening, they also have a transparency mode, which lets in some external sounds as you wish, so you don’t miss your boarding call at the airport or your dog barking at the door. Feel free to read our full review on them, but just know that this deal won’t last much longer. Neither will the deals on the Bissell Little Green cleaner (was $124, now $100) and the iRobot Roomba j7 robot vacuum (was $600, now $298), for that matter.

They’re very quick drying; you’ll feel like you just came from the spa. While you’re at it, you might want to pick up some new PJ’s for springtime. Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida says she can’t recommend Cozy Earth’s best-selling Bamboo Pajama set (was $175, now from $79) enough. “These pieces are amazingly soft, lightweight and breathable. Truth be told, Saatva mattresses are unlike any other on the market, and it’s all thanks to their genius design, which combines pillowy soft layers, supportive innersprings and cooling technology for a more comfortable sleep. It’s no secret that we’re fans of the Classic Hybrid bed (was from $1,295, now from $920); we tried it and found that it helped us get to sleep faster *andwake up feeling more refreshed each day. Not to mention, it’s coated in a botanical, antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold and bacterial growth, which means it’ll give you sweet dreams for years to come. So the fact that PureWow readers (and PureWow readers only!) can take $375 off orders of $1,000 or more right now, depending on how you customize it (with various sizes, heights and comfort levels), makes it all the more irresistible. The bed is comprised of the brand’s certified organic latex, certified organic wool and certified organic cotton, which together make it durable, cooling, hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, breathable and super soft. Plus, we found the pillow top to be an ideal bed for side sleepers who experience added pressure on their joints, so if that sounds like you, you won’t find a better mattress (well, other than the brand’s Luxury Organic mattress, perhaps, which is now under $3,000).

For the record, it’s very, very awkward to take a picture of yourself that has your hands in it and have it look natural! Why do I feel like my paws look bigger than my head here? ?

I haven’t worn rainbow nails in a minute, but I absolutely HAD TO after we rented Promising Young Woman last weekend. It’s a thriller starring Carey Mulligan as Cassie, a young 30-something woman who experiences something traumatic that leads her to drop out of medical school, move back in with her parent and…pursue other ends. I don’t want to give away too much, but it involves some revenge.

Cassie wears a pastel rainbow manicure throughout the movie, and it’s front and center at a few key moments.

I’ve been reading about the styling for the film, and it turns out that the manicure was writer/director Emerald Fennell’s idea, and fun fact for ya — she’s the lady who plays Camilla Parker-Bowles in The Crown!

Symbolically, Cassie’s nails and makeup represent both her armor and a weapon. Her sweet girlishness at times conceals her anger.

I just wanted to wear rainbows on my hands to have a little fun, but I definitely appreciate using makeup as armor.

    • Yellow: Sally Hansen Lemon Heaven
    • Mint Green: Sally Hansen Prince Char-Mint
    • Baby Blue: Essie First View

Near the end of the film, there’s a scene with Cassie in a candy-colored wig putting on a bright lipstick, and dagnabbit, even without my glasses on, and consequently being half-blind, I knew it was MAC. The movie’s makeup artist, Angie Wells, used MAC All Fired Up Retro Matte Lipstick.

I’m wearing it here with MAC Beet Lip Pencil.

skittles mani mac all fired upMAC attack!

Speaking of bright and colorful things…I got a gluten-free sprinkle boxed cake mix and a matching sprinkle cake frosting (both by Pillsbury) at Target a few weeks ago to make a cake, and you know what? It was pretty darned delicious. Both the boxed Funfetti cake and the frosting were surprisingly tasty and flavorful (I could really taste the vanilla). The cake was also light and fluffy, and the frosting spread easily.

Everything was so good that I went back to the store and got more for the next time I have to bake something last-minute!

You know that I’m totally 100% down to bake a cake and make frosting from scratch, but sometimes it’s sooooo nice to have something easy around for when you get a hankerin’ for cake.

While we’re on the topic of baking, look what I found at Michaels…

It’s in the permanent line so thankfully whenever you get the chance to try it, it should still be there. BTW the matte finish on it is beautiful! And it photographs well too.

Hope the warm weather holds up for you! It’s nice to finally go outside with just a light jacket again.

I love your nails Karen, I haven’t painted mine in months, I should do it soon.

About those cake mixes, I’m a fan of them for low-effort stress baking or getting a cake done fast for a unexpected situation. Right now I’m all about Sally’s baking addiction blog, her zebra cake was glorious and easy.

Love the rainbow manicure! Now I need to see if Dear Daughter or Dear Husband will want to watch that movie with me.
Went to grocery store this morning and I checked out the UK import end cap. There were lots of imported Cadbury treats; Aero, Bounty Crunch, Curly Wurly, Flake, Lion, Maltesers, Polo, Smarties and Wispa but NO Fruit and Nut Bars. I’ll keep my eye open each time I go, in case they restock.
I’m all for box cakes. Dear Daughter used to make a dump cake in a tube pan made from a box cake, a box of instant pudding, chocolate chips and the standard oil, water and eggs. It was the best cake ever and the one she brought to the barn every time she came off of her horse. (The rule in the barn was “kids who fall bring chocolate something. Adults who fall bring alcohol”)

I can’t find those dang bars anywhere in the Bay Area! We have a candy store here in town that sells them, but they’re not the British version. I only go there when I’m desperate. WAH!

Your daughter’s cake sounds SUPER GOOD! I think I need to do something similar ASAP, and in a pretty bundt pan!

        Here’s the “ahem” recipe.
1 box Butter Yellow cake mix. We like Duncan Hines.
1 box instant chocolate or chocolate fudge pudding.
        3/4 cup oil
        3/4 cup water
        1 TB. vanilla extract
1 cup chocolate chips (daughter quite often tosses in entire bag)
        1 cup sour cream
3 to 4 eggs (I know, it just depends on size and how fudge like you want the cake. Try 3 eggs the first time you make it, then decide)
Sift or stir all the dry ingredients together. Make a well and add wet ingredients. Beat well. Stir in chips. Bake in a well greased and floured bundt pan. Bake at 350 F. for 55 to 60 minutes.

A Soft, Springy Plum Look With Bronze and Mocha (and Warm Nude Lips)

honest beauty get it together eyeshadow paletteFeels like spring!

I got an idea! I decided I’m gonna do looks with this eyeshadow palette from Honest Beauty all week long, and this first one — a soft, springy plum look with bronze and mocha — is firmly in my comfort zone.

I’m intrigued by this palette… I like the combo of cool and warm plums and browns. Plus, most of the shades are in that mid-toned range, which means that if you have a tan (like yours truly), there’s no extra trickery involved in getting the colors to actually show up on your lids!

Also, don’t laugh, but I also love that there’s a matte beige and matte black in the palette.

Is it weird to be thrilled by that? I dunno. Maybe. Probably. 🙂 But let me tell you — having both of them is convenient, because you can use either of them as an eyeshadow base or a liner. Or, mix them with the other shadows in the palette to lighten or darken them up.

Shoot, you could even mix together to make gray (also super handy).

Having both a black and gray shade on hand is so useful! I’m a little concerned about the pans being so close together, but eh, you know… When you’ve been to this rodeo before, you can make it work.

I ran out of time to do swatches because I had to get Connor’s birthday present — a hot pink scooter. She turns five next week (!), which means that 1) spring is right around the corner, 2) I’ve been wearing ill-fitting pants for half a decade (I really need to just bite the bullet and buy clothes to replace my pre-pregnancy wardrobe, which hasn’t fit in a long time), and 3) pretty soon I’ll be living with a kindergartner.

Birthdays in our neck of the woods also mean birthday lasagna!

lasagna from connors 2nd birthdayYou know somebody loves you when they give you pasta for your birthday…

I got the idea to make birthday lasagnas from a coworker years ago. Her mom would make her a lasagna every year on her birthday, and I thought that was just the coolest thing ever. I promised myself that if I ever had a kid I’d do the same, and here I am, showing love through carbs and copious quantities of cheese. 🙂

Last year I made Connor cupcakes from scratch, but this year I decided to make it easy on myself and bought a confetti cake mix and frosting from the store. I’ve used Pillsbury mixes for brownies and liked the results, so I’m hoping this one turns out well too.

Girlfriend, give me a springy lemon print, and I am in HEAVEN.

Throwback to when this girl one was a tiny little lemon!

I spent a good chunk of last night putting ALL OF THE THINGS into my cart at Williams Sonoma because they have the cutest set of springy, citrus-themed dishes.

(Side note: did I ever mention that I have a thing for nice plates and table settings?)

This collection is called Citron, and I love everything about it.

Love the colors, love the botanical print vibes of the lemon drawings, love the graphic patterns on the plates with the leaves and the lemon slices, love it all. Don’t love the price, obvs (SO EXPENSIVE). But le sigh… This makes my heart sing for spring!

Five already – how time flies!
My son (my baby boy…) will be five in two weeks as well, and it is bitter-sweet. He still has the round baby belly I love so much, but also shows signs of being a mini-man and I don´t know if I want to freeze time or speed it up to see who he becomes.
And yes, for spring and lemon prints – the winter seems to have lasted forever, it is time we move on.

Once we got too old for presents, our birthday tradition was that we could pick whatever we wanted for dinner, and Mum would either make or buy it, depending on the request. It was one night where calories didn’t count and we could shamelessly stuff our faces with our favourite dishes until we popped ? It’s a fun tradition 🙂

Normally we ended up having the same thing each year, something that normally Mum might not cook because it was a bit pricier or time consuming, but for birthdays that didn’t matter ? We could pretty much predict what we would be eating for each sibling’s birthday, although sometimes there would be a surprise request thrown in ?

That daffodil in the photo appears to be an “Ice Follies” daffodil. I’ve been growing those for many years, as they are just about the only true large daffodil that is a fairly reliable bloomer in Texas. This blast of super-cold weather came at a bad time, as the leaves were already coming up several inches high. The leaves look pretty bad right now, so there’s a pretty good chance I’ll get either no daffodil flowers, or very few this year (they bloom best when we have long periods of cold, but not super-cold, weather).

This is a great look! You know when my birthday is, right? HAHA! That lasagna looks sublime. 🙂 I think you’re right about lemons and pale yellow in general – so springy. I still see Connor in her baby pics and also in the pic where you itemized the products you used. So, a little less baby and a little more mama. I think that’s a great tradeoff! 🙂 It’s a milestone year for her, so enjoy. Not going to lie, I just updated our hockey roster and changed “Junior” to “Senior” for my boys (grade level) and had a dangerously-close-to-sobbing moment. Did you see that supersonic flash out of the corner of your eye? Time. 🙁

Flossing Mistakes to Avoid, According to a Dentist

flossing mistakes: an illustration of a tooth and flossShendart/Getty Images,

There was a time, not long ago, when I did not floss with any regularity. Eventually, it caught up with me and I’ve been dealing with the consequences (which, to date, have included multiple fillings and a root canal). In hopes of sparing you a similar fate, I wanted to share some surprising things I’ve learned through lengthy conversations with dentists, including the top mistakes many of us make when it comes to flossing.

    ,

    Meet the Expert

Dr. Michael J. Wei is a cosmetic dentist practicing in Manhattan, New York. After graduating from Rutgers University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in psychology, Dr. Wei earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from New York University College of Dentistry in 2000. Dr. Wei also received dual certificates in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) at Columbia University School of Oral and Dental Surgery and completed a Fellowship at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Wei holds membership in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, New York State Dental Association and New York County Dental Society. Dr. Wei was voted one of America’s Top Dentists in 2005-2020 by the Consumer’s Research Council of America.

Mistake #1: Not Choosing the Right Floss for Your Needs

Waxed, unwaxed, tape, super…who knew there were so many different types of floss? So how do you pick one? According to Dr. Wei, “It’ll ultimately depend on your personal preference and the needs of your teeth and gums,” but we’ll break down some of the most common types of floss and how they’re used for you now:

    • Nylon Floss: This is the most common and widely available option. It is effective at removing plaque and food particles from between the teeth. Nylon floss comes in both waxed and unwaxed varieties. Waxed floss may slide more easily between teeth, while unwaxed floss is thinner and can fit into tighter spaces.
    • PTFE Floss: This type of floss is made from monofilament PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) material. PTFE floss slides more smoothly between teeth, making it a good choice for those with tight spaces or sensitive gums. It is also less likely to shred or tear.
    • Dental Tape: Dental tape is wider and flatter than regular floss. It works well for people with wider spaces between their teeth. Dental tape tends to be gentler on gums and is less likely to cause irritation.
    • Super Floss: Super floss is a specialty type of floss that consists of three components: a stiffened end, a spongy floss and a regular floss. It is designed to help clean braces, bridges, and wide gaps between teeth.

When choosing between these types of floss, consider the following factors:

    • Space Between Teeth: If your teeth are tightly packed, consider using a thinner floss like nylon or PTFE. If you have wider spaces between teeth, dental tape may be a better choice.
    • Comfort: If you have sensitive gums, consider a floss that is thin, smooth, and gentle, such as PTFE or dental tape.
    • Special Dental Conditions: If you have dental appliances like braces, bridges or wide gaps, consider using specialty floss like super floss as it can make cleaning these areas easier.

“The most important thing is to find a floss that you feel comfortable using and that effectively removes plaque and debris from between your teeth,” says Dr. Wei, before adding that we should all aim to floss at least once a day to maintain healthy gums and prevent tooth decay.

    ,

Mistake #2: Not Using Enough Floss to Get the Job Done

“You want to use 18 to 24 inches of floss, so you can wrap most of it around your fingers and still have a few inches to work with,” says Dr. Wei. “Hold the floss tightly against the tooth surface and slide it gently up and down in a C-shape motion.”

    ,

Mistake #3: Not Reaching Beneath the Gumline

Gently curve the floss around the base of the tooth and slide it just below the gumline, making sure not to snap or force the floss into your gums, which can cause irritation. Doing this will help remove plaque and debris from these hard-to-reach areas.

    ,

Mistake #4: Not Using a Clean Section of Floss for Each Tooth

After cleaning one tooth, use a fresh segment of floss for the next tooth. This helps prevent the spread of bacteria from one tooth to another.

    ,

Mistake #5: Neglecting the Back of Your Mouth

Ensure you floss both sides of every tooth, including the back molars. These areas are often neglected but still require proper cleaning. Take your time while flossing and pay extra attention to any areas with tight contact points.

    ,

Mistake #6: Not Rinsing Your Mouth Immediately

After flossing, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to help remove any loosened debris.

Lastly, we’ve come across varying opinions on whether you should floss or brush first, so we ran it by Dr. Wei, who recommends the following order of operations for most people:

  • Floss: It’s best to start with flossing as it helps remove food particles and plaque from between the teeth and along the gumline. This allows for a more thorough and effective brushing afterward.
  • Rinse: After flossing, rinse your mouth with water or an antiseptic mouthwash. Rinsing helps to further remove any residual debris and freshens your mouth.
  • Brush: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste to thoroughly clean your teeth, gums and tongue. Brush for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces of your teeth.
  • ,

    One Final Note

You may want to hold off on rinsing your mouth immediately after brushing (which was news to me!). “The reason is that the fluoride in the toothpaste needs some time to stay in contact with your teeth to provide added protection,” explains Dr. Wei. “So, spitting out excess toothpaste after brushing is recommended, but it’s better to avoid rinsing immediately,” he adds.

        You too!

Off topic but I keep meaning to ask if you have a particular lasagna recipe you like for birthday lasagna – I want to give homemade lasagna a go.

Hi, Sherry! Sunset Glow is the best. I love Clinique blushes and I think they’re unsung heroes!

      Happy April 1st!

Happy April 1st – I was willing to believe everything, but then the whiskers came and I remembered the date.

HAHA! I love it! Did you use Donutella for the pink liner? Mother Nature had the biggest laugh on 4/1 in these parts. She’s been luring us in with a Spring is Here vibe. But we woke up to snow on the morning of April 1st. What a sense of humor. 😉
