What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.
I know, I know — we’re all wearing masks. So, what’s the point of wearing lipstick or lip liner, or any other lip products at all?
Listen, just because my face is covered doesn’t mean I don’t get the urge to wear something on my lips. I still LOVE wearing lip color, and I’ll wear it around the house, just because. I don’t need a logical reason. ?
A few days ago I just happened to come across a lip pencil from MAC that made my heart flutter like a hummingbird, and I thought you might like it as well. It’s a warm matte peachy brown called MAC Chicory, and I think it’s lurvely.
It’s a little reminiscent of ’90s-style brown lipsticks like MAC Paramount, which is totally bad-@ss — but Chicory is a little less aggressive due to the presence of the peach, so it’s more wearable and down to earth. It’s a kinder, gentler version of the girl who loves wearing combat boots, Levis and button-down flannel.
The shade lives in MAC’s permanent line, and it’s $18. It should last a while, too. Some people aren’t fans of MAC’s pencil liners because of their harder texture, but I don’t mind it at all. I like the stiffer consistency. It helps with longevity, especially if you’re using them as a lipstick, which in this case just entails lining and filling in your lips with Chicory and layering your favorite lip balm on top. (Lately, that’s been CeraVe Hydrating Balm for me.)
If you’re a fan of warm brown eyeshadows, and you lean heavily on Soft Brown, Saddle, Sable or, if you love and wear Costa Riche or Teddy liner often (which I do!), Chicory is a fantastic complement to any of those colors.
Give it a try. I think you’ll love it!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

This is so pretty on you, Karen! I like wearing lipstick around the house too, it’s kind of a mood booster when I catch myself in the mirror!

I wear lippies for video calls at work, it helps you look good on camera. Pretty color!
I went to some kitschy local shops for stocking stuffers today and saw masks with a clear window in them- the worker was wearing one too! I know folks who sign can’t do a traditional mask because facial expressions are a part of ASL, I think it’s supposed to be helpful for those folks, but you could also show off some lips.

Hi Karen, are you wearing only the LipPencil in your photos in this post or a Lipstick oR the CeraVe lip balm over top? If it is the CeraVe does it have colour or not? I really like the lip colour.
You gave me a huge smile on a very trying day at work when you mentioned Paramount. As pale as I am and as dark as my friend is we wore that colour religiously through university. Great memories. There was another one too a lighter brown and I cannot remember the name but loved it. Thanks for making me smile! Vita

I put on not one but three Chanel lipsticks today. Of course all three were very, very, very similar in tone. It was the finish that was different. For the past three days I’ve been putting on a quick base and then trying out shadows and lipsticks in my collection. If it smells it gets tossed. If I wonder why I ever bought the color it gets tossed. If I’m on the fence about it, I set it aside in a small box to revisit it another day or compare it to similar colors. If I really like it, I put a sticker on it that says “Good, OK. or Keep” and it goes back into the collection. I’ve tossed quite a few Tom Ford lipsticks. Why do they go bad so quickly? And a couple of cream shadows. BTW, I’m wearing Prunella today. It’s my other favorite MAC liner next to Teddy.

It’s lovely (which you knew I’d say since you had me at 90s brown). You actually look super glam in the photo. Not that it’s surprising but I know it’s a casual look – it just seems quite sophisticated. 🙂

It’s no secret that PureWow readers adore SkinCeuticals’ C E Ferulic serum—a product praised for its ability to minimize signs of aging and even out complexions. Unfortunately, that hefty $182 price tag probably doesn’t fit into everyone’s monthly beauty budget. Lucky for you, we just found the perfect affordable alternative in the TruSkin Vitamin C serum (was $30, now $22), and it just might become your new favorite Amazon purchase—especially while it’s on sale.

TruSkin
While one of the biggest benefits of the TruSkin Vitamin C serum is its wallet-friendly cost, it’s also packed with tons of skin-nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and, just like the SkinCeuticals formula, a beneficial combination of vitamin C and vitamin E, which studies show may protect skin from free radicals while boosting overall brightness, hydration and even the production of collagen. The serum is also vegan and cruelty-free certified by Leaping Bunny and is formulated without parabens, harsh chemicals or fragrances to avoid skin irritation.
The serum has earned more than *90,0005-star ratings on Amazon, with plenty of reviewers comparing it to its pricier counterpart. “I ran out of SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, which I love, but didn’t want to [splurge] around Christmas. After reading glowing reviews, I gave this serum a try. Wow! Just as effective for a fraction of the cost. It smooths your skin and reduces the bumpy texture of aging skin,” raves one buyer. Another shopper shares, “You get a clean, brightened, natural and bit of a dewy look with this product. Plus, it is consistently gentle…It is truly a good, clean daily serum to have on hand! By the way, it gently smooths the back of your hands, too.”
Reviewers also claim that the lightweight formula works wonders on their age spots and milia, so it sounds like a total no-brainer to add to our routines. Whether you’re in-between SkinCeuticals refills or are looking for a gentle-yet-effective alternative that won’t break the bank, you might want to grab a bottle of the TruSkin Vitamin C serum for yourself while it’s more than 25 percent off.

Bite Beauty Upswing Full-Volume Mascara, and a Merry Christmas Eve!
December 24th, 2020 by Karen 4 Comments
“Like sands through the hourglass…so are the days of our lives.”
You know you watched HELLA soap operas when you see the brush on the new Bite Beauty Upswing Full-Volume Mascara and mumble the Days of Our Lives intro, hahaha!
This sh*t is crazy!
What’s with the curvy brush?
Bite designed it that way so the center of the brush head holds as much product as possible, which is then supposed to maximize how much mascara makes it onto the center of your lash line.
Concentrating the product right there in the middle is supposed to lift and thicken your lashes where you want it most — which is music to my ears (eyes?), because I’m all about mascaras that lift, lengthen, hold the curl, and embiggen in a bad-@ss way.
I want — no, I need — mascara to work minor miracles, and the ones I keep in heavy rotation all do it to varying degrees. Currently, I think the best overall mascaras for drama are Laura Mercier Caviar and Chanel Dimensions de Chanel, but neither of those are cruelty-free and vegan, unlike Bite Beauty Upswing.
“Upswing Mascara is powered by clean, vegan, gluten-free and cruelty-free ingredients, including tree berry wax instead of beeswax. Tree berry wax, derived from berry fruit peels, grips lashes for volume and gives them an instant and buildable boost that’s both lightweight and smudge-resistant.”
-Official PR
The bottom line
If you’re looking for big, beautiful, dramatic lashes that can be seen from a mile away, AND you want a cruelty-free and vegan option, Upswing is legit. It doesn’t smear or flake, it layers well, and it’s easy to remove; however, one thing to keep in mind is that you may need to use a few layers. I’m a girl who likes A LOT OF LASH ACTION on my eyes, and I use about three, which is actually pretty normal for me.
Where to find Upswing
Upswing just launched on the Bite Beauty website and will also be available at Sephora stores and online starting December 29. It’s $28 for a 0.40-oz. tube, so price-wise, it’s in the same ballpark as Laura Mercier Caviar Mascara, Too Faced Better Than Sex better and YSL Faux Cils. It comes in a single shade: black.
Some quick comparisons before I float away on a pink, sparkly inner tube…
Too Faced Better Than Sex — Upswing and Better Than Sex are in the same category, IMO. Both are cruelty-free and vegan, and both are made for bold lashes. Upswing is waaaaaaay better overall, though. It gives you more volume, more curl, more length, and it isn’t nearly as smudgy or flaky. Frankly, if you’re debating between the two, go with Upswing.
Laura Mercier Caviar — Upswing offers similar curl hold, length and lift, but Laura’s Caviar is more volumizing and doesn’t require as many layers. That said, it isn’t cruelty-free or vegan either.
YSL Faux Cils — Upswing isn’t as dramatic in terms of volume/thickness, but it offers similar length and curl hold. Again though, it isn’t cruelty-free or vegan.
Chanel Dimensions de Chanel — Better than Upswing when it comes to overall volume, length, curl hold and lift, but it’s also slightly more expensive at $32. That, and it, too, isn’t cruelty-free or vegan.

Like Julia Roberts’s character in Eat, Pray, Love, we, too, seek out the dolce far niente, or the sweetness of doing nothing. Thus far we’ve tracked down the staples every Italian woman over 40 owns and narrowed down the items every chic Italian woman has in her closet, and now we’re onto makeup and skincare. Italian beauty brands run the gamut from luxe fashion houses like Prada beauty and Armani beauty to small, family-owned companies like Borghese Roma and Palermo Body but what they all have in common is a sense of carefree idleness. “When I think about my country and my origins, the first things that come to my mind are food and art, [and] this translates into Italian beauty brands I know. Incredible ingredients and great packaging are a given,” says Luczeria Del Papa, a co-founder of Italian skincare brand Olivella. Italian beauty does not follow trends, it sets them with its classic approach and deep-seeded Italian roots of the family. With the help from three Italian beauty experts, we vetted a list of the 11 best Italian beauty brands to shop now. Prego, bellas.

How Does Italian Beauty Differ from American Beauty?
“Italian beauty is built around enabling expression through qualitative products and inspiring combinations that might not seem obvious at first but open a world of possibilities for the customer,” says Schena. Giraudi simply says that Italian beauty takes a “less is more” approach, and it seeks to highlight a person’s natural skin. “In both Italian and American cultures, beauty is very important, and the love for skincare and makeup is deep-rooted, but the Italian approach is more minimalistic and timeless.” We see this in the Italians’ celebration of tradition, history, and the use of natural ingredients.
Schena agrees, finding that the main difference between Italian and American beauty is rooted in the approach to culture, with the Italians honoring tradition and Americans focusing more on trends. “[Italians] love to see people manifest their own visions and become part of a virtuous circle of creativity and inspiration that continuously drive [future trends].”

Hanging With the Chanel Les Fleurs de Chanel Spring-Summer 2021 Collection
December 30th, 2020 by Karen 8 Comments
Maaan, I gotta hand it to Chanel. They have a knack for releasing righteous reds that are preternaturally easy to apply.
How do they do it?!
I didn’t even need a lip liner or lip brush for Pivoine Noire, the matte berry red I’m wearing in this look. It’s an LE shade in the new Les Fleurs de Chanel Spring-Summer 2021 collection, and yes, I can’t get over the fact that we’re talking about a spring/summer release.
I applied it freehand without much thought, straight from the tube.
Now I’m wondering if I could apply it while driving a car like Jessica Chastaine’s character does in Ava in the opening scene. She’s a soldier-turned-assassin, and with one hand she opens a tube of what I’m pretty sure is a Chanel lipstick and proceeds to flawlessly apply a layer of dark burgundy while racing down the freeway.
It’s impressive!
I wonder if I could do that… Survey says, “probably not!” LOL!
This new collection is inspired by spring blooms and warm pink, red, rose and coppery brown hues, and it lands on counters and the Chanel website next month (which starts this week!). There are lots of finishes — matte, metallic and satin — in various levels of coverage.
Here are some notes on the items I’m wearing…
The powder blush/highlighter duo
The coral-pink blush lays down a sheer flush of luminous color, so if you like blushes that don’t scream “Look at me! I’m obvious!” you might like it. I also love the finish on the peach highlighter. It’s a soft eggshell shine similar to the Hourglass Ambients. No bling-bling highlighter here.
The matte red lipstick
On the opposite end of the coverage spectrum is this gorgeously opaque matte berry red. Chanel’s Velvet Extreme formula applies flawlessly and glides along the skin without tugging, but it’s not too slick to easily control. Basically, it’s suuuper smooth, and it smells and tastes like rose hard candy.
The metallic mascara
The coppery bronze color actually shows up on dark lashes, which is super cool (colorful mascaras rarely show up on my lashes), and the Le Volume de Chanel formula delivers the thick, dramatic lash look the line is famous for. If you’ve got lighter lashes, the effect will probably be more dramatic and flattering than it is on me. On me, I think the color tends to make my eyes look smaller and more hooded than a standard-issue black mascara…
The Chanel Les Fleurs de Chanel Spring-Summer 2021 collection includes…
FLEURS DE PRINTEMPS Blush and Highlighter Duo An Exclusive Creation powder duo with a satiny peach highlighter and luminous pink coral blush. Embossed with a floral motif. Use the included brush to sweep the blush onto cheeks and the highlighter onto center of forehead, tops of cheekbones, brow bones and Cupid’s bow. Limited edition. $70.00
LE VOLUME DE CHANEL Mascara Now in a limited-edition rose-copper shade, the innovative mascara adds a colourful touch to lashes. The CHANEL-exclusive brush and volumizing formula help achieve greater length and thickness in a single stroke. $32.00
ROUGE ALLURE VELVET EXTRÊME Intense Matte Lip Colour Introducing limited-edition berry red and warm coral shades of the extreme matte lipstick. The intense longwearing formula glides on smoothly and doesn’t dry out lips. $40.00
ROUGE ALLURE LAQUE Ultrawear Shine Liquid Lip Colour The new ultra-intense, ultra-longwearing satin shine liquid lipstick in a limited-edition metallic aubergine shade. The creamy, fluid texture applies easily and wears comfortably, while the special doe-foot applicator ensures precise, even results. $40.00
LE VERNIS Longwear Nail Colour The high-shine nail colour features carefully selected pigments for even application and lasting wear. Available in 3 new shades: a soft peach, a light raspberry red and a metallic red. $28.00
AVAILABLE ON CHANEL.COM AND AT CHANEL BOUTIQUES: JANUARY 2021

Adventures in bread making
So, I made my first 1-1/2 pound loaf of French bread in my new Cuisinart bread maker yesterday!
Isn’t the loaf cute? It was a test loaf. It’s pretty small, enough for about four sandwiches.
When we opened it up after letting it cool, Connor took a bite and said, “Mmmm! This tastes good!”
The instruction booklet that came with the bread maker has a bunch of recipes, and I think I’m going to try the brioche today.
I also want to try this one honey wheat bread, which looks like the delicious brown bread they have at The Cheesecake Factory.
CARBS FOR EVERYONE!

I loved Family Feud! Mine was the Richard Dawson generation. His kissing every woman was gross but still he was “my” host, like folks and “their” James Bonds. You must have just the right amount of warmth to your skin to pull off these beautiful but too-warm-for-my-olive-undertone shades from Chanel. ONE DAY I will find a matte red that I like and that looks fine on me! Maybe that day will be in 2021! Have a great day, Karen!

You just made my day with this tidbit! And RIGHT ON for the show seeking consent and so many folks IN FAVOR of kissing. At the time I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it, either, and I liked how he held the women close during the Fast Money Round, as if to boost their confidence (or just be a perv, who knows?!). I think my over-politically-corrected mind must have told me that kissing women on the show was gross — but it was all consented-to kissing!
Lots of aloha from the South Shore!

Please Karen, could you do something on spring/summer colours and brands for pink skinned blondes like me? You look great in all that you do, but I know none of it will look like that on me!

Hi Sarah,
Thank you for the nice compliment on the colors here. Let’s see, is there anything in particular that you’re looking for, like a lipstick or a blush, etc.? Or brands that you like? I’m thinking that this would be a great comment to do a some crowd sourcing from the other MBB readers.

I am interested in this mascara. I’ve been wearing black mascaras but coppery is right up my alley.
Those lipsticks are gorgeous. The professor I worked for in grad school once picked me up for something and applied her mascara while driving, it was TERRIFYING.

Another day, another TikTok trend. In the latest frenzy, the app is rife with people raving about the benefits of rosemary oil for hair growth. From working wonders after chemotherapy to addressing baldness and being the secret to envious locks, the botanical has racked up some good press—and the endorsement of some medical and hair professionals. But after diving into the oft-cited study used to back up the science behind this ingredient, and speaking with a dermatologist and trichologist, it turns out that rosemary oil might not be as effective as you think. From dandruff to hair loss, here’s what it really can—and can’t—do.
,
Meet the Experts
Dr. Ryan Turner is a board-certified, New York City-based dermatologist who specializes in cosmetic, general and surgical dermatology, and is the founder of TRNR Skin. Turner is also an assistant professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the former director of dermatologic and laser surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Turner received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.
Shann Christen is a trichologist, founder of BioMethod and owner of Shann Christen Studio Salon in Los Angeles. Christen has over 20 years of experience in the hair care industry, including 12 of which he spent on advanced studies in Italy. Does Rosemary Oil Really Help Hair Growth?
There’s a popular study that serves as the primary citation for many people’s claims that rosemary oil can stimulate hair growth. It’s a 2015 paper published in SKINMed, a peer-reviewed dermatological journal. The abstract claims that rosemary oil is just as effective as minoxidil (a typical medication prescribed for hair loss) in encouraging hair growth. Closer inspection of the results, however, reveals that they are rather underwhelming.
“The significant difference was found between the study groups regarding hair count either at month three or month six,” the authors write. While that could mean rosemary oil held its own, there are a few important factors to consider.
For one, study participants—all male—were prescribed 2 percent minoxidil to treat androgenetic alopecia, also known as male/female pattern baldness.
,
“Typically, 5 percent [minoxidil] is recommended for male pattern hair loss, [while women are prescribed] 2 percent,” Dr. Turner explains. So, while the dosage in this study is not incorrect, it’s not optimized. According to Dr. Turner, minoxidil is a blood pressure medication, and men typically have a higher tolerance [to it]. Absorbing too much through the scalp can affect your blood pressure.
“Minoxidil works to increase blood flow to an area of hair loss,” he says. “It dilates or expands the blood vessels, and that increases oxygen and nutrients into the base of a hair follicle.”
This makes the medication effective when treating many different types of hair loss, including autoimmune hair loss engendered by lupus and alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that leads to sudden patches of hair loss. While one could extrapolate the results of the study to female pattern baldness, Dr. Turner cautions that there isn’t any data that would allow the results to be applied to the two former types of hair loss. So, even if rosemary oil holds up to minoxidil, whether it works for you depends on your condition.
“What’s difficult to interpret is how effective rosemary oil really is, because when you look at the numbers in terms of hair count, it was very minimal—we’re talking a few hairs,” Dr. Turner says. Further delving into the results shows comparison bar graphs that pretty much flatline. There are also other variables that are unclear, including the scalp surface area studied.
,
“At best, this article suggests that there can be some component of rosemary oil that could support hair and make it healthier, but we don’t know that it necessarily allows a true stimulation of new hair follicles,” Dr. Turner says. “We need more research to discover if rosemary oil [and other] botanical-based products can really regrow hair.
,
Benefits of Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth
While the study isn’t conclusive, Dr. Turner and Christen say that there are some benefits that hold up to science. “Rosemary oil contains glycolic acid, flavonoids, saponins and bitter substances, which have an antioxidant, antibacterial, astringent and toning action that [promotes] the well-being of the skin, stimulate the microcirculation and improve oxygenation at the root to strengthen the hair,” Christen explains.
Stimulate Circulation
Rosemary oil contains rosmarinic acid, among other phytochemicals known as terpenes. Terpenes, Dr. Turner explains, can increase blood flow. “There may be some interaction with the nerve cells that control the blood vessels. It relaxes them in the same way that minoxidil will relax blood vessels to increase oxygen and nutrients,” he elaborates.
,
When you increase blood flow to your scalp, this allows your hair to receive more nutrients and oxygen. Dr. Turner likens your scalp to a garden: If you don’t “water” it enough, nothing will grow. However, this isn’t specific to rosemary oil; there are many ways to increase circulation, including a good ol’ fashioned head massage.
Strengthen Hair Structure
“Rosemary oil strengthens the structure of the hair, preventing breakage and brittleness,” Christen says. Dr. Turner notes that there’s no evidence that rosemary oil can rectify damaged keratin, but says it’s reasonable that rosemary oil can support healthier hair—mainly for the reasons listed above.
,
Regulate Sebum
According to Christen, excess sebum can lead to premature hair loss (a common effect of seborrheic dermatitis). Rosemary oil can help regulate and balance sebum production, but Dr. Turner says that this is a trait of most botanicals. Many botanicals, including, tea tree oil and aloe vera, contain antioxidants that are astringent, meaning it causes skin cells to contract, which helps with oil regulation.
,
Side Effects
If used properly, rosemary oil shouldn’t cause irritation, however, Christen notes that skin irritation and contact dermatitis could occur. “It is advisable not to use rosemary essential oil [if you are sensitive to it or its components], have epilepsy, hypertension or are pregnant,” he says.
,
Rosemary Oil for Dandruff
Rosemary oil contains terpenes, which in addition to stimulating circulation, also have antimicrobial properties. Dandruff, Dr. Turner explains, isn’t just caused by a dry scalp—sometimes it’s caused by a yeast fungus called Malassezia.
“If you reduce the amounts of yeast on the scalp, you reduce inflammation and flaking,” he says, adding that shampoos like Selsun Blue and Head and Shoulders have anti-yeast properties.
Meanwhile, antioxidants in rosemary oil can help reduce inflammation in the scalp, while glycolic acid can aid with skin cell turnover. However, if a patient wants a natural remedy, Dr. Turner will recommend tea tree oil over rosemary.
,
How to Use Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth
Both Christen and Dr. Turner stress that you shouldn’t use pure rosemary oil as it can lead to irritation.
“It is preferable to mix [a few drops] with shampoos, scalp masks, spray lotions, etc.,” Christen advises. He uses many products from the Italian brand Esterel Beauty on many clients, including the Detoxinant Fluid, Atone Fluid and Sec Fluid for the prevention of abnormal hair loss or for specific alopecias, and Fluide Relaxant for dandruff, dermatitis and itching.
All that goes to say is, if you’re dealing with hair loss, get yourself to a dermatologist first, take their advice and use rosemary oil and its related products as a supplement on top of authorized treatment.

Urban Decay Decades Collection Swatches and Impressions
December 10th, 2020 by Karen 10 Comments
Watch out, Elon Musk! ? Urban Decay just took the lead in the race to develop a time machine, but no, science fiction nerds, I’m not referring to a hot tub time machine (although I secretly wish I was). I’m talking about their $25 LE Decades eyeshadow palettes, which are up on the UD website now.
Each one is themed around a different decade from the ’70s through the early 2000s, and they’re cute! They fit in the palm of your hand with colors and finishes reminiscent of that decade’s style of makeup.
No surprise here, but my favorite is 1993, and not just because of the great plaid packaging. The colors are also wearable. I was really surprised when I put them on the other day by how non-scary my eyes looked, because that did not line up with my first impression when I opened the palette and immediately thought, “Oh, boy…”
“Flattering” wasn’t the first word that came to mind, but then I put them on. ?
When I did my makeup the first time with these shadows, I did my eyes first, and I vividly remember that there wasn’t any fallout. I didn’t have to clean up any eyeshadow on my cheeks afterwards, which was great.
I think the standout’s gotta be Collect Call, a dark brown that looks intimidating in the pan but turns out to be a surprisingly wearable matte brownish purple on my skin. I blended it into my outer corner and was pleasantly surprised. It feathered out quite easily.
Grunge is another surprise. It looks like a baby threw up all over Oscar the Grouch’s fur in the pan, but no! — it’s actually a lovely satiny golden olive.
Overall, the colors in the 1993 palette are totally, and surprisingly, wearable. Who’d a thunk it?
I put the shadows on bare lids and wasn’t wearing any primer with them at all, because that’s how I roll these days, and even after five hours, I didn’t see any creasing. The shades looked just as vibrant as they did when I put them on in the morning.
I also really like Boogie, because the rainbow glitter has a holiday party vibe…so if you’ll be attending a virtual holiday party this year from your house, that would be the palette to get IMO.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I watched BeautyNews talk about these and Kat said she’s impressed with how well these are put together and marketed, even though they’re ugly lol. The snark is off the charts with those two. But, Karen, you are the BEST when it comes to glamorous everyday looks and you made the palette look very un-ugly. I’m coveting the blush and lip combo!!

I was really surprised with how wearable 1993 actually is! 🙂 I’m going to do the ’70s palette in just a few, mostly because I want to wear some crazy glitter to pick up Connor at preschool today.
How’s your day going? Good, I hope! I’m weirdly excited about eating a salad for lunch in a little bit (mostly because I like how I feel after I eat vegetables).

I saw these palettes on Instagram a few days ago and immediately thought 1993 was the one I would go for. Then again, I like green eyeshadows and the blue gray of Seattle just appeals to me. I hope you’re able to take a few pics of yourself wearing 70’s palette. Would love to see all that glitter!

There are a lot of things you can choose to fill your cart with during Amazon’s Big Spring Sale (Think: techy items like Apple Watch Series 8 or a snazzy luggage set to streamline your upcoming trips). But the one item we were most excited about saving on is a basic bathroom essential that we can use on the daily. Yes, friends, we’re talking about Crest Whitestrips. The Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects teeth-whitening kit is designed to give you a brighter smile that lasts a full year (or longer). What’s more? The Crest White Strips hardly ever go on sale, so this is definitely something you don’t want to miss out on.
,Amazon
How does it work? It’s actually really simple. The set comes with 44 thin, flexible strips that conform to the shape of your teeth. They’re coated with a tooth-whitening gel, which removes stains below the enamel surface. These strips are made with the same ingredients that dentists use, so they’re totally safe. They also work, according to the more than 84,000 Amazon reviewers who swear by them. In fact, if you use them for 30 minutes a day, Crest claims that you’ll even start to see a brighter, whiter smile in as few as three days.
Oh, and the kit also comes with two, one-hour express treatments that give you same-day results for a visibly whiter smile (ooh la la!).
We know what you’re thinking: No wonder so many people are stocking up on Crest Whitestrips while they’re discounted. We highly suggest getting yours before it’s too late, so you can rock brighter pearly whites in no time.
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream for Your Body and Face: Highly Recommended for All My Alligator People!
December 31st, 2020 by Karen 9 Comments
OK, so the packaging for CeraVe Moisturizing Cream ($18.99 for a 16-oz. jar) is a bit…clinical, and it isn’t particularly schemxy, which is why, if you aren’t in the know, you might end up passing it by, but let me tell you…this jar is a gem! It’s a drugstore miracle for My Fellow Alligator People because it’s so, so moisturizing.
My skin gets dry and itchy this time of year, and this actually keeps my face and body completely moisturized. I can’t even count how many jars I’ve finished. It’s so good! — even arguably the best moisturizer I’ve ever found for super dry-skinned peeps.
The formula is chock-full of hydrating ceramides and hyaluronic acids — ingredients thirsty skin loves — but I think most of the heavy lifting is based on how the ingredients are delivered. The fine folks at CeraVe found a way to time release the moisturizing power slowly over the course of 24 hours, so your skin is constantly receiving hydration all day (and night) long.
Developed with dermatologists, Moisturizing Cream for Normal to Dry Skin has a unique formula that provides 24-hour hydration and helps restore the protective skin barrier with three essential ceramides (1,3,6-II). The formula also contains hyaluronic acid to help retain skin’s natural moisture.
With ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II
Hyaluronic acid to help retain skin’s moisture
Non-comedogenic
Fragrance-free, non-irritating formula
–ulta.com
The thick, rich cream melts right into my skin the moment it hits it. Plus, it’s unscented, so my current favorite fragrance, Lancôme Idole, remains front and center stage.
I use CeraVe Moisturizing Cream on my knees, elbows, shins, feet, hands and cuticles… Heck, even my friend Jane over at Daly Beauty swears by it as a face moisturizer. I usually get the jar that comes with a pump, but it’s also available with a regular ol’ screw top.
Oh, and if you like to save money (um, who doesn’t?), CeraVe has a coupon right now for $4 off any of their products.
So, yeah, this stuff kicks dry scaly skin’s boo-tay! I have to warn you, though — it just might be a CeraVe gateway product. The Moisturizing Cream opened the doorway for me to several other CeraVe loves, including the Hydrating Facial Cleanser, Renewing SA Cleanser, Skin Renewing Night Cream and Healing Ointment. Half my bathroom is now filled with CeraVe, and I’m not mad about it.
Happy New Year’s Eve!
Our plans tonight involve chillin’ at home, watching movies and eating bread! Yup, I made a brioche in my new bread maker yesterday, and it turned out pretty good — soft and a little sweet, with a slightly yeast-y tang.
It’s delicious!
Even though I still feel like using the bread maker is kinda “cheating,” I don’t even care! I’m really enjoying it. It just makes it so easy to bake simple loaves. Eventually, I’ll probably end up using it to mix dough, which I’ll then shape and finish in my oven, but for now I’m having fun figuring out what it can do.
I hope you and your loved ones have a safe (and hopefully warm!) NYE. See ya soon in 2021! ?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hi Karen, Happy New Year! You must have read my mind. I was hoping that you would post a skincare recommendation. My hands have been extra dry, it’s usually dry this time of year, but with the constant hand washing, hand sanitizing, it’s wreaking havoc on my skin. I like that it keeps the skin hydrated for 24 hours. Most moisturizers don’t last on me. I will definitely have to pick up the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream the next time I go to the drugstore.

Happy 2021! I have been loving the exact same Cerave Moisturizing Cream and use it on my body and face. I bought mine at Costco. At first, I was a little leery of using it on my face, but was really impressed with how it makes my skin feel. I was so impressed that I have since purchased Cerave Skin Renewing Retinol Serum, Skin Renewing Night Cream and the Hydrating Facial Cleanser. I am loving it all! Target has a great selection of Cerave too. Your Brioche Bread looks perfect ~ Enjoy a slice for me!

CeraVe changed a lot of their formulas a few years back and they stopped agreeing with my skin. So annoying. I love this stuff as a body cream! The CeraVe Healing Ointment is great for extra dry areas. I’m curious about the new cream to foam cleanser – I find their normal foaming cleanser too drying, but the hydrating causes breakouts for me.
Brioche is so good! I should try to make a brioche sometime – I had really good luck with the Japanese Milk bread I made.

We’ll save you the whole spiel, because the ingredients speak for themselves. This scalp serum has capixyl (a peptide and red clover extract blend) known to target hair loss and encourage hair growth. The formula also includes bakuchiol, gingseng root, niacinamide and probiotics to improve overall scalp and hair health. For Associate SEO Editor Marissa Wu, she has slowly started seeing a difference in her hair after implementing the product in her routine for a few months. “I have very fine hair, so if something is oily, it shows [up on my scalp]. But, with this [serum] it doesn’t at all! I use it in tandem with other hair-stimulating products and I have noticed a lot of baby hairs spring up, so I guess it’s working,” she says.
This Virtue serum gets a stamp of approval from our experts. Formulated with peptides, ceramides and keratin, along with plant and water-based ingredients like watercress and Indian cress extract, it’s praised for improving scalp and hair health overtime. “I recommend this lightweight serum because it’s great for nightly use and is filled with peptides and hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture at the scalp without clogging the follicles,” explains Godbee.
Packed with antioxidants, extracts and peptides, this Arey pick promises to target aging hair and work with early stages of gray hair. According to Small, it’s a product he relies on for his hair and his beard: “I’m about 15 percent gray and I don’t want to use hair dye to maintain my natural hair color. I apply this serum to both my scalp and my beard area and since using I have noticed less gray hair growth and a more vibrant color.”
He continues, “I have been using this serum for a little over two years and I have fewer grays now, while constantly getting comments about the fullness of my hair. For a person soon to turn 40 I will take all the hair compliments I can get!”

Developed by dermatologists, this Dove serum vows to restore the scalp and revive strands. As Dr. Gohara explains, “The clinically-proven ingredients strengthen the scalp and boost hair density [after] about three months with regular use. It has active ingredients such as niacinamide (B3), peptides and zinc to provide nourishment. Plus, glycerin to support a healthy scalp and protect strands from future breakage.”
And if you’re looking for a wallet-friendly option, this one falls just under $15. “Another reason I love this serum is that you can use it in the morning before styling, or at night before going to bed. It gives the flexibility to your haircare routine to figure out what works best for you,” adds Dr. Gohara.
Yates recommends this Aveda overnight serum that contains probiotics, amino acids (like ectoin) and hyaluronic acid to improve scalp health overtime. “It maintains [a] healthy microbiome, soothes scalp irritation and helps maintain proper moisture balance,” she says. “It’s suitable for all hair types and I love that this formula has been reviewed by a dermatologist.”
This treatment plays the long game in improving and supporting your scalp health. Powered by Augustinus Bader’s TFC8 technology (which contains a blend of amino acids, vitamins and peptides), the treatment has been shown to stimulate the scalp, reduce hair loss and encourage healthy hair growth. On that note, the serum promises to thicken strands, while simultaneously conditioning and smoothing your hair. “It supports follicle health and helps maintain moisture balance on the scalp. Plus, it really takes care of the scalp,” says Yates.

The last thing you need is for a serum to feel heavy on your scalp. This one promises to soothe itching, while hydrating without making things greasy. It’s rich in amia (an Indian super berry), bakuchi and aloe to rejuvenate sensitive scalps. One reviewer shares, “I’ve used this twice and both times I could tell a noticeable difference in my scalp. It was very clean and [I] felt like my head could breathe. Incorporating a scalp serum to your hair routine is key!! [Though] I did feel like I needed more than one syringe, as directed, to cover the area evenly.”
This gentle serum refreshes and soothes any troubled areas with mandelic acid, chinaberry extract and eucalyptol. The anti-itch treatment also acts as an exfoliator to keep your scalp clean and flake-free before your next wash day. “I have an easily irritated, super sensitive scalp [and have to be careful] when it comes to products that state they’re supposed to ‘cool/refresh’ the scalp. This [serum] does not cause any flare ups or irritation for me at all! Love that it’s a very gentle cooling sensation—not like someone dumped a whole bottle of peppermint oil on your head,” shares one Sephora shopper.
This serum features a blend of salicylic acid and geranium oil to reduce product build up, clear up flakes and soothe the scalp. The pre-treatment also has argan oil and vitamin E that adds shine and moisture to your strands. A helpful tip: Add three drops to your dry scalp (and dull strands), let sit for a few minutes and rinse before continuing with your wash routine.
One shopper shares, “I have had the worst scalp since I was a child… I’m in my 40s now. I have tried a lot of things like [changing my] diet, dermatologist treatments, etc. I added this to my already ridiculous routine. (I also have a mixed afro that is crazy dry and fine but thick, so it’s already a lot of work.) I’m finding this treatment is a really big help. I wash my hair once a week. My scalp is now less flaky, and itchy, and the build-up is way less.”

This serum is ready to balance your oily scalp once and for all. Loaded with charcoal, tea tree oil and witch hazel, it helps unclog pores, reduce irritation and control oil production. Apply a few drops and let the serum get to work on clearing away any build up. Oh, and the peppermint provides a nice cooling sensation for a moment of Zen in your shower.
“It gets rid of any dandruff I have and does not make my hair look greasy or different in any way! I just use it after washing and while my hair is still damp. I have been using a lot of different scalp scrubs lately cause my dandruff took a turn for the worse, but this stuff still works better,” says one Sephora customer.
This multi-peptide serum promises to improve hair density, especially for people with thinning hair. It’s formulated with redensyl, procapil and baicapil to encourage growth, nourish strands and improve the overall appearance of your locks. It’s recommended to apply the product daily on a dry scalp to see the best results.
For one customer, they noticed a difference after consistently using the serum. “If you stick with this it will do wonders! After a couple weeks, I didn’t notice much. But after a month of using this every day…oh my gosh! Amazing! I’ve had a horrible hair line for years from always wearing my hair in a tight high ponytail. I had a ‘dancer hairline’ always pulled back gelled down and tight. I now see growth in areas I was insecure about [and it] even helped my eyebrows!”

Whether you’re sporting your natural curls or rocking a protective style, this scalp serum is dedicated to boosting natural hair. It’s loaded with aloe juice, glycerin and castor oil to restore and refresh dry scalps. Plus, it’s rich in peppermint and lavender oil, which offers a calming sensation to relieve any tension and inflammation.
“It does a great job of cooling [down] irritated spots and does not drip down all over my face. I apply it at night before wrapping up my hair. The problem is if you apply too much product it does cause buildup that can also cause dirt and more irritation,” says one Ulta shopper.
Whether you’re dealing with dryness, flakes or shedding, this scalp serum can help. With a blend of adaptogens and hyaluronic acid, it offers a boost of hydration. There’s also red clover flower extract that soothes and protects your strands against styling. The finishing touch? Peptides to encourage fuller, thicker hair.
For one Sephora shopper, this scalp serum has rescued her dry, flat locks: “I’ve only been using this product for a few days, but I’m already in love! I was worried it would be oily and leave my hair greasy, but it’s so lightweight that you can apply quite a bit and you can’t even tell! It also gives your hair a nice lift, making it look more voluminous. I also have dry, flaky scalp and I think this helps soothe and hydrate it. I’m excited to see the hair growth results! I know this is a pricier item, but I think it’s worth the splurge.”

Whether you’re on-the-go or need an instant fix, this scalp serum has your back. It promises itch and tension relief in about 15 minutes. Made with alternsis botantics and peppermint oil, the serum minimizes any inflammation and irritation upon application. Plus, the nozzle tip makes it easy to apply directly on the scalp, especially if you’re rocking a tight hairstyle (i.e, ponytails, high buns or braids). “I have a sensitive scalp that is prone to flares of itching and flaking. I use this product when I have braids or any other protective style and it is the only thing that constantly soothes my scalp,” says one Sephora reviewer.
Your scalp type plays a large role in finding the right serum that addresses your hair needs. Here’s what our experts have to say:
If you have an oily scalp, consider formulas that clarify and control oil production. Reslan says ingredients like glycolic acid, apple cider vinegar and charcoal are a great start.
If you have a dry scalp, hydrating formulas are the way to go. Godbee suggests water-based, lightweight oils that won’t be too heavy on the scalp (which can create product build up). Instead, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, tea tree oil and argan oil to hydrate and maintain your scalp’s moisture.
If you have thinning areas, you’ll want to find serums that encourage healthy hair growth. Look into zinc, biotin and vitamin-based products (like vitamins A and E) to improve fullness, reduce shedding and repair locks. Philip B. also suggests growth-activating ingredients like Redensyl: “It’s rich in vitamins and essential oils. It also provides nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles and increases the blood flow in the scalp—making hair stronger and thicker.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Scalp Serum?
“Scalp serums are concentrated topical formulas that help soothe, nourish and rebalance the scalp,” explains Godbee. “As a hairstylist, I stress to all of my clients the importance of a healthy scalp. It’s the foundation to having healthy, strong hair and encouraging hair growth,” she adds.
What Are the Benefits of Using a Scalp Serum?
Have irritation? Flakes? Dryness? Thinning? There’s probably a serum out there for you. The benefits include (and are not limited to) calming, nourishing and cleansing your scalp. Another major pro of using a scalp serum: it protects and prevents future issues from happening—if you’re consistent, of course. “They are an ideal ‘solution solver’ that [can be] added to the routine [to combat things like] product build up, environmental factors or other common stressors,” adds Philip B.
What Ingredients Should You Avoid in a Scalp Serum?
Find scalp serums that are paraben-, sulfate-, formaldehyde- and silicone-free. These ingredients can increase flakiness, sebum production and shedding. Reslan also points out that some natural ingredients can do more harm than good. “Although there is a conscious effort to avoid commonly known toxic ingredients in hair care, it’s equally important to be aware of natural ingredients that can irritate your scalp or worse, cause thinning,” says Reslan. “Many plant-based hair brands [use] high concentrations of botanical oils [in their products] that can be irritating. If combined with alcohol, the penetration is enhanced on the scalp, which may increase irritation in sensitive individuals. If you’re already thinning, it’s best to avoid these ingredients [altogether].”
What Are the Steps to Using a Scalp Serum?
The experts suggest using a scalp serum daily and following these three steps to get the most out of the product. 1. Start by combing (or brushing) your hair. Smalls suggest doing this first to get all the tangles out and making it easier to apply the serum. “I recommend using a wide tooth comb to make little ‘lanes.’ These lanes will be where you apply the scalp serum to allow even application directly to the scalp,” he says. 2. Read the instructions on the dosage. Every scalp serum is different, so read through the instructions on how much to use on your scalp. 3. Use your fingertips to massage the scalp. Once applied, gently massage the product on the scalp in circular motions. “When using your finger tips to distribute product, try not to run your hands through you hair. Try keeping the product only on the scalp. 4. Apply more if needed. You can apply a bit more on any areas of concerns.
How Often Should You Use a Scalp Serum?
The frequency will depend on how often you normally wash your hair. That said, all of the experts recommend using a scalp serum on freshly shampooed hair for best results. As Yates explains, “Regardless of application, do NOT apply the serum and then wash your hair. The purpose of the serum is to leave it on for the most effective results.”
